Review – Fringe – Amber 31422

How coincidental! I think I may be a doppleganger and you are a twin!

This week:
We are back in the alternate universe. People are still alive after being ambered. Switch and double switch. Hallucinations. Crossing over. Olivia coming to terms with the truth.

Pluses:
Greater understanding of Walternate’s motivations and conscious.
Greater insight to the impact the mini-blackholes are having on this universerse.
Nice use of Peter.
Awesome jumps!
Olivia’s realisation of the truth.

Minuses:
Still no development of Astrid.

I am really enjoying the RED episodes. I can see myself understanding more and more their predicament and that how, in both worlds, the best of intentions has truly drastic consequences. Part of my wants a BLUE episode next week – to see what is happening with Peter and Fauxlivia, but a bigger part of me wants to continue to explore the other Universe as I am finding their motivators incredibly engaging.

Review – Fringe – Do Shapeshifters Dream of Electric Sheep?

Self medication is good, m'okay?

This week:
Self medication. Infiltration. Humanity. Threats. Dirt Nap. Getting jiggy.

Pluses:
Newton being awesome.
Fauxlivia’s power play.
Massive Dynamic.
The humanity of of the Shapeshifters.
Excellent empathy developed for the guest and minor characters.
I loved how Peter CAN tell and his thoughts about it.
Are Fauxlivia’s intentions still pure?

Minuses:
Newton no!!!! (loved that wry smile!)

I said in a review of a dismal ep of Caprica that this episode of Fringe handled the question of what it is to be human better than Caprica – which was a bit of a surprise as it is one of the main themes explored on Caprica. These few weeks while the show is on hiatus has been hard, as the show left the viewer really needing some short term resolution to its new questions. Oh and I loved the HT to Bladerunner author Philip K. Dick.

Review – Bones – Season 6 eps 1-4

Cross Promotion Anyone?

This week/s:
Random people do something. They find a body/bodies. Bones and team interact in often humourous ways while using science and “dectecting.” Romantic innuendo. They solve the case.

Pluses:
The characters are still fun in their limited and repetitive ways.
Squintern of the week.

Minuses:
For the love of Pete can we PLEASE break from pattern!??!
Ridiculous professional antics.
Lack of empathy for victim and killer.
Extremely limited character development.

I don’t know – I was hoping Bones would step up this year, what with the new love interest for Booth and all, but it is just the same old same old. I was VERY disappointed part of the plot on the season return… without giving anything away, the team are so fantastic that they do in <24 hours what a team of professionals couldn’t do in 6 weeks.  God, and don’t even get me started on the Jersey Shore cross promotion episode. That was painful.
Don’t get me wrong, this is still a bit of fun, a kind of thinking man’s totty – but I won’t be setting the record button on IceTV app. It used to be I would watch Bones then fall asleep through Castle. This season it is the reverse. I will fall asleep through Bones and set up Castle for record.

Review – Fringe – The Plateau

Fringe The Plateau Season 3

Fringe Division is a long way from a basement with a resident cow.

This week:
Olivia and Fringe Division have an impossible case to solve. Biros are important to the case but redundant to life. Hallucinations. Hat tips to the show’s roots.

Pluses:
Fantastic concept for this standalone ep.
RED!!!
Cross universe moments.
Parallels.
“I just have a bigger lab.”

Minuses:
Ummm. Can’t think of any at the moment.

Rollicking good yarn. Nice twists and turns as we see Olivia living Fauxlivia’s life – solving cases and getting on with life.

Review – Fringe – The Box

Peter and Walter work together to save the day (again).

This week:
Walter tries to reconcile with Peter.  Astrid supports Walter. Fauxlivia is up to her nefarious schemes. Walter and Peter save the day.

Pluses:
Nice plot turn for Walter.
Good Fauxlivia development.
Nice background info on Walter and Bell.
Just enough season plot to pull it through.
Bacon flavoured pudding.
Blue episode (no that doesn’t mean XXX).

Minuses:
Seems unnecessarily convoluted (even for Fringe).
Astrid still has no development.
How can Peter not know?
No real sense of urgency to the episode/case.

Decent stand alone ep, with some intermeshing of the overall arc of the season. I just hope that this was one of the few slow eps of the season.

Fringe – Season 3 Premier – Olivia

Team Red or Team Blue?

Team Red or Team Blue?

Straight back in where we left off, only days have past since the Opera House.
Olivia is being brainwashed. Escapes. Doesn’t escape at all. Walternate acts all nefarious. Water acts all Walter. Peter loves Fauxlivia.

Pluses:
Brilliant acting by Anna Torv (go Aussie!) and Andre Royo
Fantastic plot development.
Red episode (for non-fans Red means the alternate universe).
Lots of throw away shots and comments for Red.
Acevedo’s Charlie Francis.

Minuses:
Wonder how I am going to empathise with Red.
How can Peter not tell?
Whole week till the next ep.

Fringe was slow to start, so stick with it if you gave up. Season 2 is awesome and Season 3 is set to be a game changer.
